Caravan Shower & Toilet Roof Hatch Guide: 280mm vs 320mm
A caravan shower or toilet roof hatch combines an opening roof vent with a powered fan to help move air through your bathroom. Extraction is useful for removing humid air after showering and ventilating enclosed toilet areas.
VanDIY offers two SJRV Turbo Vent models: a 280 × 280mm version without LED lighting and a 320 × 320mm version with an integrated LED light. Both use a 12V DC fan and a manually operated lid.
Compare the 280mm and 320mm SJRV Turbo Vents
| Feature | 280mm Turbo Vent | 320mm Turbo Vent |
|---|---|---|
| Roof cut-out | 280 × 280mm | 320 × 320mm |
| Power supply | 12V DC | 12V DC |
| Fan operation | Two-way ventilation and extraction | Two-way ventilation and extraction |
| Lid operation | Manual opening and closing | Manual opening and closing |
| Insect screen | Included | Included |
| LED lighting | No | Yes |
| Suitable roof thickness | 28–80mm | 28–80mm |
| Main application | Caravan toilet, shower or bathroom ventilation | Caravan toilet, shower or bathroom ventilation with lighting |
The roof cut-out and lighting are the main differences to consider. Choose the size that suits your installation rather than selecting by appearance alone.
Why Fit an Extractor Fan in a Caravan Bathroom?
Showering releases moisture into a relatively small enclosed space. An extractor fan draws humid air outside, helping the bathroom dry when replacement air can enter.
Ventilation also helps clear stale air and everyday bathroom odours. It works alongside regular cleaning and drying of wet surfaces.
A roof hatch ventilates the room itself. It is separate from the toilet cassette or waste-tank venting system.
Choosing the Correct Roof Opening
The cut-out is the opening through the roof, not the outside dimensions of the lid or trim.
The two SJRV models require different openings:
- 280 × 280mm for the 280mm Turbo Vent.
- 320 × 320mm for the 320mm Turbo Vent.
For a replacement, measure the existing roof opening and roof thickness. Allow space outside for the housing and lid movement, and inside for the trim.
Both models are listed for roof thicknesses of 28–80mm.
280mm Turbo Vent: Compact Ventilation Without LED Lighting
The SJRV 280mm Turbo Vent fits a 280 × 280mm opening. Its compact format suits smaller bathroom roof spaces where this opening size is required.
It combines a 12V two-way fan, manual lid operation and an insect screen. This model does not include LED lighting, making it an option where separate bathroom lighting is already provided.

320mm Turbo Vent: Ventilation with Integrated Lighting
The SJRV 320mm Turbo Vent fits a 320 × 320mm roof opening and includes an LED light.
It combines bathroom ventilation and interior illumination in one roof-mounted assembly. The fan runs from 12V DC, while the lid opens and closes manually.

Two-Way Fan and Manual Lid Operation
Both models provide two-way fan operation for intake and extraction.
Exhaust mode draws bathroom air outside. Intake mode brings outdoor air into the room.
The lid is opened and closed by hand. An electrically powered fan does not mean the lid opens electrically.
When extracting, provide a suitable path for replacement air to enter the bathroom. Follow the model’s operating instructions for lid position, wet weather and travel.
Power, Installation and Care
Both models require a suitable 12V DC supply. Installation involves secure roof mounting, appropriate wiring and a weatherproof seal around the hatch.
Keep the insect screen and fan area clean to maintain airflow. Periodically inspect the roof seal and operating mechanism, following the care instructions supplied with the product.
