Caravan Windows - Avoid plastic frames and only use aluminium
Why Plastic-Framed Caravan Windows Don’t Last

Plastic-framed caravan windows might look fine when new, but over time they tend to develop cracks, leaks, and structural problems that cause frustration for owners. The image above shows a typical example of cracking near the hinge area, where stress and movement eventually cause the frame to split.
1. Cracking and Structural Weakness
Plastic window frames are prone to cracking, especially where hinges or fasteners are attached. The constant vibration and flexing of a caravan while traveling puts pressure on these weak points. Once cracks form, water ingress and further damage often follow.
2. Short-Term Fixes Don’t Solve the Problem
Many owners end up sealing cracks with silicone repeatedly, as replacement frames often fail in the same way. One frustrated owner described the experience:
“I’ve been stuffing around with these for 4 years and siliconed the cracks from behind. They aren’t leaking now, but every time the frames got replaced it was just more silicone smeared over the van, so I gave up.”
3. Design Flaws at the Hinge
Most plastic-framed designs use riveted hinges that focus stress on a small area of the frame. Over time, that stress causes cracks where the hinge is attached. Aluminium frames, on the other hand, feature an internal frame surround that screws to the actual window frame in multiple fixing points, distributing the load more evenly and eliminating the chance of cracking.

4. Limited Support and Unknown Suppliers
Many imported plastic windows have no visible brand or supplier information. That makes it difficult to source replacement parts or get warranty support. Some caravan owners report that manufacturers are unwilling to identify the supplier, leaving them to deal with the problem themselves.
5. Why Aluminium Frames Are Better
- Much stronger under vibration and road movement
- Bolted hinges instead of riveted ones for greater durability
- Resistant to UV damage, cracking, and warping
- Easier to reseal and maintain over time
- Supported by reliable Australian suppliers with available spare parts
Upgrade to Reliable Aluminium-Framed Caravan Windows
If you’re tired of dealing with cracked or leaking plastic windows, consider switching to SJRV aluminium-framed windows that are built to last. They’re stronger, easier to maintain, and designed for Australian conditions.
