How to Measure for Caravan Steps - Height, Mounting and Clearance
Correct sizing makes steps safer and easier to use. Measure the doorway, ground clearance, and mounting points before you buy.
Key Measurements
- Threshold height - ground to door sill on level ground. This guides one-step vs two-step choice.
- Tread width - choose a width that covers the doorway and feels stable underfoot.
- Mounting span - centre-to-centre spacing of chassis rails or cross-member where the step will bolt.
- Folded clearance - distance available when the step is retracted; ensure it won’t foul skirts or tanks.
- Departure angle - check that the folded step sits high enough for ramps and spoon drains.
One Step vs Two Step
- One step - suits lower thresholds; lighter and simpler.
- Two step - better for higher vans; reduces knee lift and helps kids and older travellers.
Mounting Notes
- Use existing reinforced points where possible.
- If drilling, seal bare metal and use appropriate plates or brackets.
- Confirm bolt size and torque per the step manufacturer.
Tip
Measure twice and take photos of the underbody mount points. It makes selection and install faster and safer.
