Installing Automatic Caravan Steps - 12V Wiring and Safety
Installing Automatic Caravan Steps - 12V Wiring and Safety
Automatic steps add convenience but require correct 12V wiring, fusing, and weatherproof connections. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely.
Electrical Basics
- Dedicated fused feed from your caravan distribution panel or auxiliary battery.
- Correct cable gauge for the run length and peak current.
- Quality earth - return to the system negative/bus, not thin sheet metal.
Control Options
- Door switch - deploy on open, retract on close.
- Manual rocker - driver control when a door trigger isn’t desired.
- Ignition interlock (optional) - inhibits deployment while moving.
Install Steps
- Mount the step to reinforced points as per manual.
- Route wiring in split conduit away from moving parts and exhaust heat.
- Seal connections with heat-shrink and weatherproof grommets.
- Function test - deploy/retract multiple times; confirm automatic stop and obstruction clearance.
Safety Notes
- Warn users to stand clear during movement.
- Fit a visible LED courtesy light if supplied; fuse per spec.
- 240V work must be performed by a licensed electrician.
Bottom line
Good wiring and waterproof terminations are the difference between trouble-free operation and intermittent faults.
