Installing Caravan Lithium Batteries - Wiring, Fusing and Mounting
Installing Caravan Lithium Batteries - Wiring, Fusing and Mounting
Intro
A tidy install is safer and performs better. Focus on correct cable sizing, fusing near sources, and secure mounting.
Location and Mounting
- Mount securely on a flat surface with appropriate brackets.
- Avoid direct engine bay heat - most caravan installs are inside cabinetry or lockers.
- Allow access to terminals, BMS reset points or display if fitted.
Cable Sizing and Voltage Drop
- Size for maximum expected current and the full cable length (there and back).
- Keep runs short and use quality lugs with proper crimping.
- Route cables to avoid chafe - use conduit and grommets where needed.
Fusing and Isolation
- Fit main fuses as close as practical to the battery positive.
- Fuse branch circuits to suit cable size and device ratings.
- Include an accessible isolator for maintenance and storage.
Charger and Inverter Placement
- Keep chargers close to the battery to reduce voltage drop.
- Provide ventilation around inverters and high-current equipment.
Note
Mains-voltage work must follow relevant regulations. Consult a licensed professional for 240V wiring.
