Caravan Steps Buying Guide: Manual vs Electric, Single vs Double

Choosing caravan steps involves two separate decisions: how many tread levels you need and how you want the step to operate. A single or double step determines the stepping arrangement, while manual or electric operation determines how it extends and retracts.

VanDIY’s SJRV range includes a single manual step, a double manual step and a single electric step. All three feature LED lighting and a maximum load capacity of 200kg.

The drop measurements describe the step assembly. The distance between the lowest tread and the ground also depends on where the assembly is mounted and the height of the caravan.

Manual or Electric Caravan Steps?

Manual Caravan Steps

Manual steps extend and retract by hand. They suit owners who prefer a straightforward folding mechanism and are comfortable opening and closing the step themselves.

The single manual SJRV model uses spring assistance. Its folding mechanism operates without electrical power, while the integrated LED light requires a suitable 12V supply.

Choose between:

Electric Caravan Steps

An electric caravan step extends and retracts using a powered mechanism. It offers convenient operation when the entrance is used frequently or reaching down to fold a manual step is inconvenient.

The SJRV single electric step operates from a 12V supply using a switch and includes an LED light strip.

Single or Double Caravan Steps?

A single step provides one intermediate tread between the ground and the doorway. It suits an installation where that arrangement creates comfortable stepping distances.

A double step adds a second tread, dividing the climb into more stages. It can be useful for a higher entrance or when an additional foothold makes access easier.

The choice depends on your doorway height, mounting position and the ground clearance available. Electric operation changes how the step moves; it does not add a second stepping level.

What to Measure Before Choosing a Step

Park the caravan on level ground at its normal camping height, then record:

  • Ground-to-doorway height.
  • Available mounting width and mounting-hole positions.
  • Space beneath the doorway for the folded assembly.
  • Clearance through the step’s full opening and closing movement.
  • The resulting distances from ground to tread, between treads and up to the doorway.

For a replacement, also record the existing step’s dimensions and fixing positions.

Our guide to measuring for caravan steps explains doorway height, mounting space and folded clearance.

LED Lighting and Tread Grip

LED lighting helps make the entry area visible after dark. The SJRV steps in this range include lighting, so you can choose the stepping arrangement and operating method you prefer without giving up that feature.

The SJRV single manual and single electric models feature aluminium tread profiles with anti-slip rubber strips. The double manual model uses anti-slip aluminium tread profiles.

Keep the stepping surfaces clean so dirt and debris do not obscure the grip.

Mounting and Everyday Use

These SJRV steps are designed to remain attached to the vehicle. A suitable mounting structure and clear opening path allow the assembly to move freely and support its rated load.

An electric step also needs the correct 12V supply, wiring and protection specified for the model.

Fully extend the step before use and retract it before travelling. Keep hinges, fasteners and tread surfaces in good condition.
